David Craner
My appearance on BBC 2’s Ready Steady Cook was
an experience not to be forgotten; it gave me the opportunity to promote
both Crewkerne and Beaminster to a wider audience. I even received
a message from a South African Town Crier to say that he saw it. It
also gave me the opportunity to promote local produce.

David was born in Coventry way back in the dark and distant past. As a lover of folk and traditional music he moved to Dorset in the early nineties where he maintained a keen interest in English tradition. As a Morris Dancer David became a devoted member of Frome Valley Morris until injury forced him to retire as a dancer in 2002. He did however continue as the Fool and delighted in whacking dancers with his pig’s bladder whenever they dared to step out of line when dancing. Another interest was developed when David joined the New Hardy Players, a group of Thomas Hardy and William Barnes enthusiasts, who performed plays and recitals in various locations in Dorset. After playing the part of a loud voiced character in one play someone commented that he would make a good Town Crier with a voice like that. This inspired him to make enquires to local councils to see if there might be an opening for him.
After letters went out to many Town and Parish Councils. Crewkerne Town Council wrote back to say that they were interested and arrangements were made to go before the Committee to show them how a Town Crier would be of benefit. It was agreed unanimously and a contract for a two year trial period was signed. David now enjoys a very full calendar of bookings for both civic and community events as well as representing the town at many competitions in both this country and abroad spreading the name Crewkerne far and wide. There continues to be good results from competitions; the most prestigious being the successful defence of the Somerset County Championships. David has now held the title of Somerset Champion Town crier for a second year; an achievement for which he is extremely proud. Now as a Crier for Beaminster as well as Crewkerne David continues to enjoy his role and would like to promote himself further with the introduction of this website. This
